This scammer from Craigslist was a little bit different than the others.

He send me an email asking if the item is still for sale and when I immediately replied him, he added me in the Yahoo messenger and commenced chatting with me about his "interest" on the product!

Never had such experience before. But the rest was the same as the other Nigerian scammers and he wanted to pay via paypal.

This one used a more elaborate tehnique to steal. he asked me to request money from his paypal email account. Doing this he gains access to two things

1. My "real" details, or so he thinks

2. An entry in my paypal account saying that the payment status is pending.

The payment status is ofcourse pending cause I asked the money and he "replied" but in reality he didn't reply through paypal, and paypal is expecting him to reply.

So he is using this "pending" entry as an excuse to tell me that:

The payment for your Gumtree item has been verified and confirmed. But due to security reasons on both sides of the buyer and the seller the status of the payment is pending. Most sellers do not ship out the exact items as they have listed on Gumtree and we are keen on securing the Gumtree community.

You will be required to post out the item and email us its shipment reference number. We will then verify the status and contents of the shipment within 5 minutes with the courier service its been shipped through. Once we have completed verification, your account will be credited instantly.

after reading some of the forum posts here in gumtree scams, I came across this one:

"I applied for to jobs on here and within a week iv received over £500 in cheques or travellers cheques, sound great till i started getting death threats to send the money back, they ask for your address then will tell you they will send you a payment so you know they are serious. they work in so many ways, they are either mony laudering, drug money or they are trying to get acess t your bank details. and the p[olice can't do anything about it, infact i still have the cheques a home."

So my thoughts were pretty much correct. If you provide address and name, then you get threatened and blackmailed...

Things get a bit strange, but scammers are always scammers...

This time the scammers have reached an all time low point wanted to buy something that costs just 10£ offering 50£ and wanting to arrange a courier on their own, asking for my address, name and telephone number.

My thoughts about this is that they might be wanting to send me a "hot package" if you get my point, or even deliver this "package" by themselves.

then the next step after my reply, it was to send me the following typical for this situation email:

"Hi,Thanks for getting back to me,just to let you know that am showing my interest in buying your item,so i will want to know more about it.

I will want to know the recent condition of this item and its total amount.I 'm sending it to a Friend in West Africa as a surprise package,via Royal Mail or Parcel Force International Signed For,but unfortunately I'm not opportune to come down to get the item myself due to work transfer,so i will really appreciate if you can kindly post the item for me which i will offer you the sum of 50 for postage and packaging of the items Abroad.

Having heard about the Nigerian scams before, I was alerted by the high price of the postage he was prepared to pay and the fact that he wanted to send the item in Africa.
Similar situations before this one, the next step after I gave them my details to send the money in Paypal, I received a strange letter of confirmation form paypal for receiving the funds, but when I logged on in my paypal account, there was no money there.

Little bit after, the "buyer" send me an email, saying that he had send the money and I received a paypal email!!!
